before and after electricity

Life in general, and inevitably the concepts of music and of music-making, changed dramatically with the wide-spread adoption of electricity. Electricity is the precursor to current-day technology. Hopefully someone has written, somewhere, in some format, a concise dissertation about this; I would like to read it.

Things get louder. Things get faster. Sounds get bigger. Now we can reach into the component parts of sounds.  Now we can move sound around the room. We can even perform music in outer space.

We are still at the beginning of this phase of musical experience. I like to think of this in terms of the Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, and that the advent of electricity is another appearance of The Monolith.

smart music. in tasty bites. for your sonic satisfaction.
